In Males, the prostate gland is a muscular structure that sits below the bladder and surrounds the tube where urine comes out from (urethra).
With age, the prostate gland becomes bigger in size and this is called Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy. When the gland enlarges, it can press on the tube which carries the urine, causing problems such as:
•Difficulty passing urine
•Disrupted flow of urine (starts and stops) •Reduced pressure in the flow of urine
•Waking up more frequently at night to pass urine
•Urine dribbling after you’ve finished passing urine
However, sometimes, there can be a tumour of the prostate gland which can also present with identical symptoms as the above.
Therefore, it is important that if you any of the above symptoms, that you see a doctor who can examine the prostate gland and arrange a tumour marker blood test for prostate cancer.
It is the only way to know if your symptoms are benign or need further investigating for cancer.
As part of all our health screens, we look for symptoms of prostate enlargement and cancer, examine the prostate and arrange a prostate cancer blood test ( even without symptoms).
